The Cavani String Quartet celebrates 25th anniversary with Beethoven & Brotherhood Project

Beethoven

The Cavani String Quartet, Cleveland’s own internationally renowned, award winning chamber music ensemble, is embarking on an exciting project to bring the experience of live music into the intimate settings of libraries throughout the greater Cleveland area.

From September 2008 through May 2009, the Cavani String Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at the Cleveland Music Institute of Music, will be offering sixteen performances in neighborhood libraries to celebrate the music and message of Beethoven. The Beethoven & Brotherhood Project combines the live music experience with what the sanctuary of a library offers: knowledge, freedom, inspiration, and creative energy.

The music of Ludwig van Beethoven has a message of hope for all and transcends boundaries of class, race, gender, religion, and age. In the past century, Beethoven’s works have been synonymous with brotherhood and humanity. The sixteen complete string quartets are a biographical view into the evolution of Beethoven’s creative life, and provide both performer and listener a glimpse in to the mind of this musical genius. These are an ideal expression of freedom of thought, emotion, and communication.

Each concert will consist of one entire string quartet surrounded by a commentary from quartet members; a format that will foster and encourage audience participation and interaction with the quartet.

"Having hosted this internationally renowned chamber music ensemble, I am personally familiar not only with the high caliber of their artistry, but with the tremendous impact they have on their audience when performing in the intimate setting of the library. Indeed, when the Quartet approached me with the idea of performing the complete Beethoven cycle in sixteen area libraries, I encouraged my fellow library directors to participate in this magnificent initiative."

Beethoven Lives...
at the Shaker Library!

The Cavani String Quartet played Beethoven's Opus 131 at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Shaker Heights Public Library as part of its Beethoven and Brotherhood initiative. We had a most appreciative audience of approximately 144 people, which did not include those library visitors who came to get or return a book and lingered to enjoy the concert. While the Quartet played on Beethoven's death date, the many talents of the group brought his music to life.

It was a lovely evening and the demographics of the group included senior citizens, adults, and young children who sat on the carpet beside a parent. All of the comments were positive and enthusiastic, among them:

  • "There is something wonderful about the combination of music and books."
  • "Excellent musical program."
  • "Excellent Cavani Quartet."
  • "Great program!!!"
  • "I liked the way you played your instruments."
  • "What an excellent program. Thanks very much."
  • "Loved it!!"
  • "What a great evening!"
  • "Wonderful!"
  • "This was wonderful music making and the question-and-answer period after was great. Thank you."
  • .
  • "It was wonderful to hear this excellent quartet in a different setting. Surprisingly, the background noise did not disturb me. Thank you. Terrific program."
  • . . . and 25 succinct and sincere responses of "Great!"

Not only did the Cavani String Quartet provide lovely music, but they also conveyed such enjoyment in performing and drew us all into their magical, musical circle. They came armed with a large display picture of Beethoven and musical programs for everyone that included information about the composer and interpretative considerations. Their question-and-answer session following the concert was engaging and humorous. While their talent was apparent during the concert, their playful, unpretentious answers to questions were engaging and positioned the musicians as performers with heart and humor.

While the benefits of this concert are quantifiable in the number of attendees, what is immeasurable is the quartet's positive influence on our youth, who so engagingly asked the musicians questions about how long they practiced and how old they were when they began playing their instruments. Indeed, the musicians' range of musical starts -- from being home schooled at age 4 to taking up the cello in a public school music program at the age of 9 -- provided inspiration to fledgling musicians who now can dream. Who knows what young musician in the audience has been inspired?

The members of the Cavani String Quartet are rock stars! Hear them, engage them, but most of all, enjoy them!
